13 Taliban militants killed in shootout in Karachi

Police say they've killed at least 13 alleged Taliban militants in a shootout in Karachi, Pakistan on Monday.

Police Inspector Mohammad Ismail says the firefight lasted some time, and that they recovered a number of weapons.

(SOUNDBITE) (Urdu) POLICE INSPECTOR AND OFFICER IN CHARGE OF SOHRAB GOTH POLICE STATION, MOHAMMAD ISMAIL, SAYING:

"Inside the police cordon, an exchange of gunfire took place which lasted a long time; these thirteen terrorists clad in police uniforms were killed. Explosives, ball bearings, Kalashnikovs, repeaters, TT pistols and thousands of rounds were recovered from the militants."

At least four of the suspected militants were dressed up as police officers.

Police have stepped up their presence across Pakistan following a bloody attack on a school in the northwest of the country that left at least 132 students dead.
