The CIA has admitted that more than half of the UFO sightings reported in the 1950s and 60s were actually crafts they’d put in the air for spy mission purposes.

This valuable nugget of information was most recently brought to the public’s attention via Twitter.

Getting in on the popular year-end trend of ‘best of’ lists, the CIA tweeted a link to its most popular reports of 2014.

Coming in at #1 is a document titled, "The CIA and the U-2 Program, 1954-1974", which contains a section devoted to UFOs.

According to it, during the midcentury flurry of alien spacecraft sightings the agency was both secretly testing and utilizing the U-2 spy plane.

As it flew at 60 thousand feet above ground, something planes didn’t typically do back then, many of those who saw it in the sky assumed it was a machine from another planet.

A lot of eyewitnesses called in reports, and according to the CIA document, more than half of the sightings chronicled were affirmatively linked to the spy plane’s missions.

Unfortunately, they were unable to tell anybody at the time, but now they have.
