Two new underwater mountains have been officially mapped, and it appears not a second too soon.

Located off of North Africa and discovered by the UK’s Royal Navy, the seamounts are in the midst of an area that experiences a lot of shipping activity.

Prior to the elevated masses being documented, vessels passing through the area were especially vulnerable to sailing right into them.

Unfortunately, dangers of that variety remain largely undiscovered and thus uncharted. It’s estimated that 90 percent of the ocean floor is inadequately explored.

Though satellites can and have found some natural obstacles, the most dependable means of identifying them remains searching from the water’s surface itself.

The ship that made the recent discovery is the Royal Navy’s HMS Enterprise, which is equipped with a device called a hydrographic multi-beam echo sounder.
