Decades of conflict between the Colombian government and FARC rebels may be coming to an end. Peace talks have been taking place in Cuba since 2012 and in December of last year, the FARC declared a unilateral ceasefire.

In an interview with FRANCE 24's Marc Perelman, Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos sounded optimistic about the chances of brokering a peace deal with the FARC. "It's very difficult for me to set a specific date" for a deal, he said. "It has backfired before, but I would hope that this year we could end this conflict", he said.
Stating his belief that the FARC rebels "are now aware that they have no alternative", Juan Manuel Santos said he is "convinced" that "this time they want peace".
