NASA is launching a new satellite to measure soil moisture on Earth in unprecedented detail.

To do this it will deploy a six-metre wide mesh antenna described as a giant space lasso.

Once operational the satellite will produce lots of data, providing potentially life-saving information during emergencies like floods or drought.

Al Jazeera's science editor Tarek Bazley reports.
