There is quite a well known craft toy that involves a small wooden figure climbing up two strings if you pull alternatively on one string and then the other.

This toy works on a similar principle, except that instead of having to pull manually on each string in turn, you simply move the toy so that the wooden weight at the bottom moves in a circle, and this achieves the same effect. As the weight swings round, the little teddy bear climbs the strings until it reaches the top.
