Eighty seven prisoners at Albany Jail part of HMP Isle of Wight were evacuated after fire took hold on the third floor and smoke affected it and the fourth floor of the Isle of Wight prison. Six appliances including the aerial skylift were deployed to the prison after a 999 call was made at 7.24pm. Two casualties were taken by ambulance to nearby St Mary's Hospital suffering from the effects of breathing-in choking smoke. Several prisoners were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation. They were evacuated from the prison's A Wing to the gymnasium while firefighters tackled the blaze, the cause of which will be investigated by forensic experts in the morning. Meanwhile jail staff were taking measures to make prisoners comfortable for the night.
