Egyptian President Nasser tried to wear down Israel by the means of a war of attrition. Initially, the Egyptian artillery opened fire on the Israeli position on the east bank of the Suez Canal in 1968. Israel replied with commando operations and airstrikes. This went on for two years. Egypt only ceased hostilities after death of Nasser.
