A rally has been held in Istanbul to voice outrage after a 20-year-old woman was beaten to death as she tried to fight off a man attempting to rape her.

The victim, Ozgecan Aslan, was attacked while travelling in a minibus in the province of Mersin.

Protester Cerci Ozkan said: “We are gathered to prevent girls like Ozgecan from being murdered and prevent them from being exposed to domestic violence.”

Another protester, Mutlu Aktas, said: “I am against all kinds of violence and rape against our youth, our young girls and daughters.”

The Turkish President described violence against women as the “bleeding wound” of the country.

A 26-year-old man has been arrested, along with his alleged accomplices.
