The Vatican has announced that Monseñor Oscar Arnulfo Romero, known as the "bishop of the poor," will be beatified on May 23 in El Salvador. He was murdered by a right-wing death squad as he was giving a mass in 1980 due to his support for movements that opposed the tyrannical regime backed by the United States government.
