The Sigiriya Frescoes (info: http://www.svetputovanja.info/sri-lanka-biser-indijskog-okeana/) were painted on the western surface of Sigiriya Rock which is located in the Matale District of central Sri Lanka.
They were the highlight of a massive palace complex built by King Kasyapa in 480AD.
Ancient graffiti, scribbled on the Mirror Wall, refer to the existence of as many as five hundred of frescoes covering a large section of the western surface of Sigiriya Rock. Protected in a small indent on the rock surface about a hundred meters above ground, only nineteen paintings survive today. Over the years most of the frescoes were lost due to environmental factors such as wind and rain as well as being intentionally removed due to human intervention.
