Yemen’s Houthi fighters and their allies seized a central Aden district on Thursday striking a heavy blow against the Saudi-led coalition that has waged an eight-day campaign of airstrikes against the rebel group in the Arabian Peninsula's poorest state.

Dozens of unidentified troops landed in Aden in an apparent last-ditch effort by the Saudi-led coalition as rebels intensified their push on the southern Yemeni port city.

The soldiers arrived in a single vessel a few hours after Iran-allied Shi’ite Houthi rebels swept into Aden’s central Crater district.

Residents of the district said Houthi snipers had deployed on the mountain overlooking Crater and were firing on the streets below.

Separately, in the Arabian Sea port of Mukalla, al-Qaeda militants stormed the central prison and freed at least 150 prisoners, some of them al Qaeda detainees.

The attackers took control of government buildings, including the city's central prison, central bank and radio station during the assault early Thursday.

On Yemen’s border with Saudi Arabia, a Saudi border guard was killed and 10 others wounded when their observation post came under fire from the Yemen side of the border.

The campaign against the Houthis is now the biggest of several ongoing conflicts in Yemen, which is also dealing with a secessionist movement in the south and an al Qaeda branch seen by U.S. officials as the most capable of carrying out attacks against the West.
