Dortmund has seen the decline of three major industries: coal, steel and brewing. In 2001, the Phoenix Ost Steelworks was shut down; in a poignant sign of the industry’s changing fortunes, the individual parts were shipped to Asia. The former industrial site is now dominated by an artificial lake.
