Paramedics rushed an Australian man to a hospital in Darwin Wednesday night after he consumed a beer bottle, according to a police spokesperson.

The unidentified 38-year-old man was reportedly having dinner with his family when he chewed and swallowed the glass bottle.

Police Superintendent Louise Jorgensen said the man "went for a lie down" after consuming his sharp snack. He started complaining of stomach pains.

"His family then called police and St John, and he was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital," Jorgensen said.

Paramedics arrived to the Wagaman house around 9 p.m.

Jorgensen also told reporters the number of calls dispatched to police were far higher than normal this week. Police reportedly received about 500 calls just between the hours of 3 p.m. and 11 p.m. on Wednesday.

"People are dismayed when we can't respond to their jobs immediately, but this is why -- because of all these other jobs that are coming in," Jorgenson said.

She said police received roughly 450 emergency calls on Tuesday.
