The United States Army announced on Tuesday it has begun to destroy the country's remaining stockpiles of chemical weapons held at the Pueblo Chemical Depot in southern Colorado.
A process called the Explosive Destruction System will be used to destroy an estimated 1,300 damaged chemical munitions containing mustard agent at the Pueblo Chemical Agent Destruction Pilot Plant, according to a statement by the U.S. Department of Defence.
Ninety percent of the U.S.' mustard and nerve agents were destroyed at depots in Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Maryland, Oregon, Utah and the Johnson Atoll in the Pacific, in 2012. The remaining nerve agents are stored at two depots in Colorado and Kentucky, according to CNN.
