Rescuers on Monday found the body of a 32-year-old female hiker who had battled extreme weather for hours in New Hampshire.

Planning to hike the Presidential Range, New Yorker Kate Matrosova was dropped off by her husband at the base of Mount Adams at around 5:00 a.m. Sunday.

About 10 hours later, Matrosova, who was hiking alone, activated her personal locator beacon, sending her coordinates to rescuers.

However, rescuers failed to locate her. "Unfortunately, a lot of the coordinates that we received over the night are all over the place within a mile circumference," said Lt. Jim Goss, of New Hampshire Fish and Game in an interview with New Hampshire Public Radio. The rescue operation was further obstructed as temperatures dropped below -30°F (-34ºC) and wind speeds exceeded 100 miles per hour (160 kilometres per hour).

A National Guard helicopter was deployed Monday morning, but rescuers could not locate Matrosova as snow had reduced visibility.

Rescuers found the body of the hiker near Star Lake between Mt. Madison and Mt. Adams later on Monday. Authorities believe Matrosova died of exposure to the extreme cold.

They say Matrosova was not equipped to hike in the extreme weather.
