The US Department of Transportation last week announced the addition of two automatic emergency braking systems to the recommended list of safety features under its New Car Assessment Program safety ratings system.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration now recommends that future vehicles to be equipped with two sets of braking systems: crash imminent braking and dynamic brake support, according to a report by Autoblog.

Once a possible collision is detected by sensors placed on the front of the car, the crash imminent braking system automatically slows down the vehicle.

However, if the vehicle has not slowed enough, the dynamic brake support system will kick in to avoid the collision.

While the two braking systems are not mandatory for all vehicles, the Department of Transportation will list details of their inclusion or exclusion on their website.
