French authorities shot and killed the Kouachi brothers, who were suspected of the Charlie Hebdo terror attack and hostage taker Amedy Coulibaly on Friday, ending a three-day manhunt.
The Kouachi brothers reportedly stole a gray Peugeot in Montagny-Sainte-Felicite on Friday morning before leading police on a chase down the N2 motorway, reported by La Figaro and the Independent.
They were then cornered with a hostage inside a printing house in Dammartin-en-Goele, about 40 kilometres northeast of Paris, the New York Times reported. The Kouachi brothers came out from the printing house with guns blazing just before 5 p.m. Police returned fire and killed both of them. Their hostage was freed.
A gunman, later identified as Amedy Coulibaly shot and killed four hostages upon entering a supermarket on the eastern edge of Paris on the same day, CBC reported. Coulibaly also placed 15 explosive sticks in the supermarket and threatened to kill the remaining hostages if French authorities launch an assault on the Kouachi brothers. Police later stormed the supermarket and killed Coulibaly, CBC reported. A total of hostages were freed.
A massive manhunt is underway for Coulibaly’s 26-year-old girlfriend Hayat Boumediene who may have escaped during confusion after the police assault at the supermarket, AFP and Reuters reported.
