A Spanish police officer is dead after being pulled into the path of an oncoming train at a railway station in Madrid.
Officer Francisco Javier Ortega, 28, was talking to a group of men around 12 p.m. on the platform at Embajadores station in Madrid, when he allegedly asked one of them to see his ID.
A minor scuffle broke out while commuters took out their phones to record the incident.
That’s when footage shows one of the men grab Ortega and drag him onto the tracks, just as a train is seen pulling into the station in the background. Screams are heard as both men are hit by the train.
Ortega was transported to the hospital but later died from his injuries.
The man who allegedly dragged him on to the tracks was 28-year-old Yode Ali Raba from the Ivory Coast, according to El Pais.
Raba survived being hit by the train and is currently in the hospital with a severe head injury. Spanish papers are reporting that he illegally entered Spain in 2011.
The C5 line is the only commuter train to pass through Embajadores and connects Móstoles and Humanes stations, according to El Pais. Train services were suspended between the Atocha and Laguna stations.
