The Russian Black Sea port of Tuapse declared a state of emergency on Thursday as stormy weather hampered cleanup efforts after an oil spill.
The spill occurred when a major oil pipeline burst on Tuesday, spilling oil into the Tuapse river, which flows into the Black Sea.
In a statement cited by AFP, ChernomorTransneft, a subsidiary of Russia’s state-owned oil transport monopoly, said a landslide damaged the wall of the pipeline, causing the spill. The company said about 8.4 cubic metres of oil spilled into the Tuapse river.
The World Wildlife Fund, however, said the volume of the spill could be 100 times greater than that claimed by Transneft. The WWF estimates the spill polluted 15 kilometres of the Black Sea shore, and that the volume of the spill could be up to 800 cubic metres.
On Thursday, more than 300 workers were engaged in cleanup efforts despite the stormy weather, according to a statement on the Krasnodar regional government’s website, AFP reported.
