The body of Xie Guang Shun, a 36-year-old engineer missing for more than two months, was located this week in Huashan mountain near a military firing range.
Xie went missing in October. He got into his white van and drove up into the mountains, apparently for some fresh air and peace and quiet.
The last sighting anyone had of Xie was CCTV footage at a nearby rest stop. He can be seen turning left out of the parking lot and a few minutes later his van is caught on camera heading up the mountain.
Xie’s girlfriend said when he didn’t return she started to worry that he’d had a car accident and was lost in the mountains or worse. His girlfriend and family have been searching for him ever since, posting missing person papers in the area where he was last seen.
Earlier this week, beekeepers checking on their hives noticed a white van parked 50 meters downhill from their hives. When they went to check they found a body hanging from a nearby tree.
Police collected Xie’s body and said that the corpse was in an advanced stage of decomposition. An autopsy will need to be conducted to determine exactly how long the body has been in the mountains.
Although it seems fairly straightforward, police will also wait on the autopsy results to determine whether Xie’s death was accidental or a suicide.
