Sony Pictures has canceled the Christmas Day release of The Interview, the comedy starring Seth Rogen and James Franco that centers around a plot to assassinate Kim Jong-un, the glorious leader of North Korea.
The decision comes after the biggest movie theatre chains in the US chose not to screen the film following threats by a hacking group that also allegedly hacked Sony. The group, calling themselves the Guardians of Peace, also warned the public to stay away from theatres screening the film.
“We are deeply saddened at this brazen effort to suppress the distribution of a movie, and in the process do damage to our company, our employees, and the American public,” Sony said in a statement.
"In light of the decision by the majority of our exhibitors not to show the film The Interview, we have decided not to move forward with the planned December 25 theatrical release," it said.
“We stand by our filmmakers and their right to the free expression and are extremely disappointed by this outcome.”
The FBI has been investigating the attacks and apparently believe the attacks originated in North Korea.
Regal Cinemas, AMC Entertainment and Cinemark Theatres, the top three North American chains, announced they were postponing screenings. Canada’s biggest theatre chains also dropped the movie. This left Sony with no choice but to postpone the release of the film.
