A fatal shark attack in waters on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef took the life of a teenaged fisherman on Monday.
Daniel Smith, an 18-year-old fisherman who had just completed year 12 at Mossman State High School, died, likely due to severe blood loss, following the attack, which happened near Port Douglas, a resort town on Australia’s north-eastern coast.
While swimming on Rudder Reef with friends, at around 11:30 am, Smith was bitten on his right upper thigh, groin, and upper arm by a shark and immediately went into cardiac arrest.
His friends alerted authorities and performed emergency first aid, using an on-board defibrillator.
His friends were still performing CPR by the time they arrived on shore around two hours later, according to local reports quoting Queensland Ambulance Service executive manager of operations Greg Thiedecke.
By the time they arrived at the hospital, however, Smith had succumbed to his massive injuries. It’s still not yet known what type of shark attacked the teenager.
Spear fishers attacked by sharks are typically bitten on their thighs because of bait often tucked into their weight belts, according to veteran diver and head of the Association of Marine Park Tourism Operators, Col McKenzie.
