One tourist was killed and several others were injured on Wednesday when a tourist balloon flight in central Turkey crashed to the ground after being hit by strong winds.

The balloon was carrying around 10 passengers in a trip over the renowned sightseeing region of Cappodocia when the winds hit.

One Chinese tourist who was standing up taking photos at the time fell from the balloon, which then made a hard landing on a barren hillside, according to the South China Morning Post.

The Chinese man, later identified as 23-year old Tang Yi, was killed in the incident while several others passengers including five Malaysian nationals were hospitalised with injuries, with one in a critical condition.

An investigation has been launched into the incident.

The death is not the first in the popular tourist spot. Three Brazilian tourists were killed in May 2013 when two balloons collided in mid-air.
