Cat scratch disease also known as cat scratch fever is actually a common and fairly benign infectious disease caused by the bartonella quintana bacteria, or by listening to Ted Nugent.

In Taipei last week there was a little boy who got scratched by the family cat while he was sleeping. His mom didn’t think much of it until two weeks later when the little boy developed a lump under his left armpit.

After she took him to the doctor, the doctor informed them that the little boy had cat scratch disease. The lump was just a swollen lymph node and round of antibiotics would clear it up right away.

The doctor reminded the family that cats are natural carriers of the bacteria and after petting or playing with the cat they needed to wash their hands thoroughly. If they were bitten or scratched by a cat they had an increased chance of an infection.

Family pet cats should also be bathed regularly to reduce the spread of the bacteria.

Children and the elderly are more susceptible to being infected by the bacteria as they have weaker or compromised immune systems.

So just keep your hands and your pets clean! Here kitty, kitty, kitty!
