A 19-year-old Pennsylvania woman is lucky to be alive after she was knocked out cold by a deer that flew through her windshield while driving.
Heidi Shank was driving north with passenger Ryan Snyder on Warm Spring Road Saturday night around 6:51 p.m. when a deer jumped across the road and struck Shank’s 2013 Chrysler Sebring.
The deer went right through the windshield, struck Shank in the face and landed on her lap, authorities said. The blow knocked her out, and Snyder pulled up the emergency brake and then grabbed the steering wheel to get control of the moving vehicle.
With Shank’s foot still on the accelerator, Snyder veered the car across the oncoming lane of traffic and through a soybean field. The car then hit an embankment as it entered a Sunnyway parking lot. Snyder was able to steer the car around the gas station before finally striking a safety post.
Shank was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.
