A train engineer is missing after his train derailed on Thursday morning into the Moisie River in Quebec.

The train was towing three locomotives and 240 railcars, many of them empty, CBC News reported, when a landslide is believed to have pushed it off the tracks and caused it to plunge into the river.

According to the Quebec Environment Ministry’s emergency team, the accident also caused the locomotive to spill diesel into the Moisie River for hours after it ran off the tracks.

The locomotive’s reservoir could carry up to 18,000 litres of fuel, but it is not clear how much fuel was in the tank at the time of the accident. CTV News Canada said an oil spill extended for about 20 kilometres out from the shore.

Divers were sent to the scene to search for the missing operator, the Ottawa Sun reported. The name of the man has not been released.

Rio Tinto said all railway traffic has been suspended until further notice.
