More details have emerged about the case of the 29-year-old British expatriate banker in Hong Kong who has been charged with the murder of two foreign women.

Rurik Jutting, a former Merrill Lynch employee, called police at 3 a.m. on November 1 asking them to come to his rented apartment in the city’s Wan Chai district. When police arrived at the 31st floor residence, they found Jutting rambling incoherently and woman in a pool of blood with deep knife wounds to her throat and buttocks, but still alive.

She died moments later and has been identified as Jesse Lorena Ruri, a 32-year-old Indonesian who had moved to Hong Kong eight years earlier to work as a domestic helper.

Several hours later, forensic police moved to the balcony, where they discovered a woman's feet protruding from a suitcase. Inside was the body of another woman, whose head had nearly been severed. Her hands and feet had been bound, and the presence of maggots suggested she’d been dead for some time.

She has been identified as 25-year-old Indonesian Sumarti Ningsih, understood to have arrived in Hong Kong last month on a tourist visa. She was arrested for breaching the terms of the visa, possibly working as a prostitute.

Inside the apartment, police found cocaine, sex toys, a cellphone and a 12-inch blade.

On the cellphone, police discovered some 2,000 images, including pictures of one of the dead women, leading them to investigate the possibility of other victims.

It appears Jutting had planned to kill himself. Emails to his former work address return this out-of-office reply: “I am out of the office. Indefinitely. For urgent enquiries, or indeed any enquiries, please contact someone who is not an insane psychopath ... For escalation please contact God, though suspect the devil will have custody [Last line only really worked if I had followed through].”

Jutting had recently left his job at investment bank Merrill Lynch. The company has refused to talk about him.
