Looks like the academic and athletics scandal at the University of North Carolina was much bigger than previously reported. UNC released on Wednesday results of an independent investigation that found more than 3,100 students took classes under a “shadow” curriculum.
Former U.S. Justice Department official Kenneth Wainstein was in charge of the investigation after the NCAA reopened the academic misconduct probe in June, when new information became available.
For 18 years between 1993 and 2011, Debby Crowder and Dr. Julius Nyang’oro designed a cake curriculum inside UNC’s African and Afro-American Studies program largely made up of paper-only independent study courses and lecture-only classes where attendance was optional.
Overall, about 1,871 student-athletes were enrolled in the shadow curriculum, and of those, 1,189 were football or basketball players. Football and basketball players made up 38 percent of the students involved.
School counselors, it was found, frequently steered student-athletes with crappy grades toward these fake classes.
At least nine university employees have been fired or are under disciplinary review. The NCAA will now have to decide what it will do next. But since it’s the NCAA, don’t cross your fingers.
