North and South Korea exchanged gunfire on Sunday after soldiers from the North approached the border.
About 10 North Korean soldiers reportedly approached the demarcation line separating the two Koreas near Paju, northern Gyeonggi in the South, Korea JoongAng Daily reported. The soldiers came as close as 2 feet to the border, according to local media Insight.
South Korean soldiers broadcast warning messages but the North Korean soldiers failed to retreat. Soldiers from the south then fired warning shots at 5:40 p.m., the Wall Street Journal reported.
The North Korean soldiers returned fire before they retreated. The exchange of gunfire lasted for about 10 minutes, the Wall Street Journal reported. No casualties were reported.
The shooting came nine days after North Korea tried to shoot down large balloons released by South Korean activists carrying anti-regime propaganda leaflets, the New York Times reported.
