Women in Mexico City are often the targets of street harassment that may lead to far more serious sexual abuse. In the case of Yakiri Rubio a seemingly inoffensive catcall was a step towards attempted femicide. On December 23, 2013, Yakiri charges that she was forced onto a motorcycle and taken to a hotel where she was raped and would have been killed had she not fought off her aggressors, one of whom died after leaving the hotel. But the men who attacked her face no charges. Yakiri herself was charged with the homicide of a man twice her size and jailed for 86 days. Laws do exist against gender violence, but they’re usually not implemented in Mexico City. Neither is anything being done to prevent it. Yakiri has become a strong advocate of women’s empowerment against femicide and patriarchal power.
