Thailand seized three tonnes of elephant tusks worth about $6 million, the second biggest ivory bust in the country's history, customs officials said Monday.

Somchai Sujjapongse, the director general of Thailand's Customs Department, told reporters the ivory would likely have been sold to buyers in China, Vietnam and Thailand, Reuters reported.

The ivory was hidden in a shipment of tea leaves that was shipped from Kenya on March 24. The shipment passed through Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Singapore before it was stopped in Thailand. Its destination was to have been Laos.

Last Monday, Thai officials announced the largest ever ivory bust in Thailand's history, when 739 elephant tusks weighing four tonnes were seized at port in Bangkok.

Thailand's ivory market is the largest unregulated ivory market in the world. The country has until August to take measures to shut down domestic trade in illegal elephant ivory or face trade sanctions under the Convention on the International Trade of Endangered Species.
