An officer in Huntsville, Alabama has taken administrative leave after shooting a woman in her garage during a domestic dispute on Sunday.

Lisa Skinner, 52, shot her estranged husband after he broke into her home armed with a pistol and a large knife, Sgt. Darryl Lawson said at a press conference following the incident.

Bradley Skinner, 59, violated his restraining order and broke into Lisa's home through the back door at around 6 p.m.

Lisa's mother, who was there at the time, ran to a neighbor's house to call 9-1-1.

Lisa then grabbed a shotgun and tried to leave through the garage, but Bradley followed her. Fearing for her life, she shot him in the chest.

Moments later, police arrived and found Lisa still holding the shotgun. Police told her to drop the weapon, but she did not immediately comply. An officer then shot her in the hip before police handcuffed her.

Paramedics took Bradley and Lisa to a local hospital. Bradley was still in critical condition as of Monday, according to Lawson.

A restraining order was intended to prohibit Bradley from coming within 100 yards of Lisa, due to cited violent behavior and a drug problem.

AL.com reported authorities had to remind Bradley to leave Lisa alone again on Friday, just two days before the shooting.
