Temas is a theoretical journal of political and social debate published in Havana. It has discussed subjects such as civil society in today's Cuba, the lingering legacy of racism, religion, Cuban communities abroad, socialism and democracy, among many others, from a critical perspective. The magazine also sponsors open monthly forums where participants engage in a freewheeling debate on topics of current interest. Many point to Temas as proof of the ongoing vitality of the Cuban revolution. In today's program, host Cristina Escobar interviews Rafael Hernandez, a leading Cuban intellectual, writer, political analyst, and director of Temas. Hernandez discusses the 20 year experience in publishing Temas and organizing its forums; civil society and the culture of debate in Cuba; the outlook and need for public and critical discussion, a view also expressed by the country's leadership, especially President Raul Castro; and the generational turnover in the island. teleSUR
