While it is true that the Honduran government has passed laws for equal salaries for men and women, initiated campaigns against domestic violence and created offices in some city councils to deal with the rights of women, these measures fall far short of what is needed and often serve to disguise the reality of women’s oppression, say feminist organizations. They say there has been a reverse in the rights women formerly had and that the government is doing nothing to resolve structural problems. The government doesn’t lift a finger to deal with deeply ingrained problems and has prohibited the sale and use of some birth control pills. Honduras is the country with the highest rate of femicides. Every 14 hours on average, a woman is violently killed. Some activists face criminal charges for defending their rights. Gerardo Torres reports from Tegucigalpa for teleSUR.
