Major League Baseball witnessed an historic first this week as the Baltimore Orioles and the Chicago White Sox played ball without a crowd.

The Orioles wouldn't allow fans to attend Wednesday's game out of safety fears arising from the ongoing Baltimore protests.

According to Reuters, games at the Oriole's Camden Yard had been postponed after violent protests started in Baltimore following the funeral of Freddie Gray, a black man who died in police custody.

MLB official historian, John Thorn said that this is the first baseball game to ever be played without fans.

White Sox Outfielder Adam Eaton joked on Twitter that his team "were going to take the crowd out of it early. While the Orioles manager reportedly asked, "Does the mascot work today?"

Despite the lack of a crowd, the Orioles won the game 8 to 2.
