The Liberian man who was diagnosed with the Ebola virus in Dallas, Texas has been identified as a 42-year-old Monrovian resident named Thomas Eric Duncan, Liberian government officials said Wednesday.
Duncan reportedly had directly contact with a pregnant woman who was overcome by the virus in Sept. 15, four days before he flew from Liberia to the United States, according to the woman’s parents and Duncan’s neighbors.
Duncan had gone with the family of the woman, Marthalene Williams, 19, in a taxi to a hospital on Sept. 15 after they failed to get an ambulance, the woman’s parents said, according to reporting by the New York Times.
The Times said the woman’s parents said she was seven months pregnant and convulsing.
After they were turned away from the hospital for lack of space, the family said Duncan helped them take her back home at around 3 a.m., with neighbors witnessing him help the woman’s father and brother carry her.
The woman’s 21-year-old brother, Sonny Boy, also became sick around the same time that Duncan began showing symptoms, said the Times. Sonny Boy has since died from the disease.
