Evidence gathered from witnesses and DNA collected from the crime scene suggest that more than two people were involved in the murder of two British backpackers whose bodies were found on Koh Tao on Monday, Thai police said.
The two murdered backpackers, Hannah Witheridge, 23, and David miller, 24, left a bar on the Thai resort island at around 1 a.m. Monday morning. The pair’s half-naked bodies were found behind large rocks on the beach at around 6:30 a.m. Witheridge suffered injuries to her face, while Miller sustained wounds to his head and hands, suggesting that he had been involved in a fierce struggle.
Thai police recovered DNA from cigarettes and traces of semen on Witheridge’s body. Tests indicated that the DNA belonged to two different men, neither of which was Miller.
Thai police held two of Miller’s British friends and prevented them from leaving Bangkok until DNA test results on Thursday ruled them out as suspects. A third westerner and 11 Burmese migrant workers were also tested. None of them provided a DNA match.
Police were still gathering evidence on Wednesday, but according to reports, the area was not properly sealed off and people were not stopped from leaving the island after the murders.
