Stephen Hamper of Denver is in jail after attacking a 10-year veteran police officer and trying to steal her gun.
Officer Aubree Thompson responded to reports of a homeless man — later identified as Stephen — doing his laundry in a drainage pipe near the Downing St. on-ramp to Interstate 25.
Hamper acted aggressively toward Thompson when she approached him. As she tried to detain him, he punched her in the face before she was able to handcuff him.
Hamper took off toward her car but wheeled back around, jumped on top of her, and started beating her face and body. Two men — later identified as Mike Guillan and Tyson Ingels — pulled over to help the officer Other bystanders called 9-1-1.
As the men yanked Hamper away, Thompson protected her gun. She then got up and finished the job, arresting Hamper for trying to disarm an officer, and three counts of assault.
This was to Hamper’s third arrest for assaulting an officer of the law. He will appear in Denver County Court on Friday.
He reportedly defended his actions to police, saying: “you guys kill little children and old ladies.”
