Tennessee authorities are still looking for 17 of the 32 teens that escaped from a Nashville youth detention center late Monday night.
Nearly half of the escaped juveniles from the Woodlands Hills Youth Development Center in Bordeaux were captured before sunrise.
The teens, aged 14 to 17, were able to climb under the chain-linked fence at around 11 p.m., according to Communications Director for the Tennessee Department of Child Services Rob Johnson. “At about 11 o’clock last night, about 32 youth - we believe - got out of their dorms and managed to slip underneath the perimeter fence,” he said.
Johnson said the teens escaped during a shift change at the center. “As the staff were trying to get the youth back into the dorms and out of the yard, they realized some of them had managed to pull up a fence and crawl underneath it,” he said.
Two of the juveniles were recaptured immediately, and several more were back in custody by 4 a.m.
Several of the escaped teens were reported to be seen hiding in drainage pipes and in bushes. Authorities were seen combing the area on foot with K-9s and from a helicopter.
The teens were last seen wearing gray or white T-shirts, dark blue pants and white or black sneakers.
Authorities said around 80 teens were placed in the Woodland Hills Youth Development Center.
