The shooting of African-American teenager Michael Brown by a Missouri police officer on Saturday sparked riots in the town of Ferguson.
A few hundred protesters peacefully gathered outside Ferguson Police headquarters on Monday, some marching with their hands up in the air and chanting “Don’t shoot me”, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Monday’s peaceful demonstration came a day after tensions erupted on Sunday night, when a candlelight vigil held to remember the 18-year-old turned into a riot, CNN reported.
Several stores were ransacked, a convenience store looted and a police car vandalized. Police arrested 32 people, the Wall Street Journal and CNN reported.
Michael Brown’s fatal shooting happened after a police officer encountered him on a street in Ferguson. According to the police’s version of events, the officer tried to get out of his car, but Brown pushed him back and tried to take his weapon.
Witnesses, however, say Brown was unarmed and had his hands in the air when he approached the police car.
Multiple shots were fired by the officer and shell casings found at the scene of the shooting matched the officer's gun, the Wall Street Journal reported.
According to CNN, Brown was about 35 feet from the vehicle.
According to Reuters, many in Ferguson believe race played a factor in the shooting. The St. Louis branch of civil rights group the NAACP is now demanding further investigation into the case.
