The Taiwanese government stands accused of abuse of power in its treatment of activists protesting closer ties between China and Taiwan.

The meeting of the director of Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) Wang Yu-chi (王郁琦) and the Chinese director of the Taiwan Affairs Office Zhang Zhijun (張志軍), the first ever Chinese ministerial-level official to visit the island country, sparked outrage across the nation. The government is accused of abuse of power after raiding hotel room registered under the name of a protest group leader at a Novotel hotel where the two ministers were to meet.

The group of seven people checked into the hotel on the 24th, one day before Zhang arrived in the country. An officer from the National Security Bureau, accompanied by the the hotel security and the police charged into their room on Wednesday morning and ordered them to leave. After they refused, they were besieged by the police on guard outside their room, and were not allowed to leave their room. The were eventually freed at around 7 p.m.

The activists involved condemned the government for violating their freedom of expression, as their freedom of movement was deprived for more than 10 hours, adding, "are we back to an authoritarian regime?"
