An explosion struck a viewing centre in the town of Damaturu in northeastern Nigeria, where football fans had gathered to watch a match on Tuesday.
Witnesses say a suicide bomber in a tricycle taxi drove into the venue soon after the kick-off of the Brazil-Mexico match, setting off an explosion that killed seven people and injured 15 others.
Boko Haram Islamic extremists have been targeting football viewing centres and sports bars in northern cities, killing at least 40 people in two blasts in recent weeks. Concerned about potential attacks, the Nigerian government has advised residents to avoid gathering in public to watch the World Cup.
Damaturu is the capital of Yobe state, an area that has been devastated by attacks from militant Islamist group Boko Haram which abducted more than 200 schoolgirls in the neighboring state of Borno in April.
