As many as four assailants indiscriminately stabbed passersby outside Guangzhou's main train station on Wednesday morning, the third such attack at a Chinese train station in less than two months, local media reported.
The attack began shortly after a train from Kunming arrived in Guangzhou at around 11:30 a.m. According to the People's Daily, one attacker had been squatting near a snack shop for hours. A report by Nanfang Daily said the attacker took off a red cap and revealed a white cap, of the kind usually worn by Chinese Muslims. He then pulled out a knife and started slashing people in the plaza.
According to the China News Service, Liu Yuying, a tourist from Inner Mongolia, was attacked by two assailants while taking photos of the train station. A man and a woman from the Liu's tour group were also stabbed. After arriving at the scene, police issued warnings, which went ignored. One assailant was shot dead and another arrested. The other two attackers fled the scene.
Hours after the incident, Xinhua, China's official news agency, stated on its Weibo account, the Chinese version of Twitter, that only one attacker was involved. Xinhua said the lone attacker was captured and hospitalised.
Some witnesses told local media that the assailants look like Uighurs. Their identities have not been confirmed by authorities.
The knife attack came less than a week after an explosion at an Urumqi train station wounded more than 70 people, which coincided with President Xi Jinping's visit to Xinjiang.
