A Malaysia Airlines code share flight was forced to turn back because of technical problems on Thursday (April 24), making it the fourth Malaysia Airlines flight forced to abort since flight MH730 disappeared less than two months ago.
Flight FY1002, a code share with Malaysia Airlines flight MH9948 operated jointly by Malaysia Airlines and its subsidiary Firefly Airlines, took off from Penang International Airport for Kota Bharu at 6:55 a.m.
According to a statement by Firefly Airlines, the ATR 72 aircraft's landing gear was unable to retract and the plane was forced to turn back after being airborne for 15 minutes. The plane, with 64 passengers and four crew members on board, landed safely in the Penang airport at 7:30 a.m.
The aircraft was sent off for repairs and the flight was rescheduled, departing Penang at 8:50 a.m. and arriving safely in Kota Baru at 9:50 a.m.
Malaysia Airlines' latest mishap happened only days after Malaysia Airlines flight MH192 en route to Bangalore was forced to turn back mid-flight after its pilot detected problems with the front landing gear during take-off.
