Agricultural day laborers in the San Quintin Valley in the northwest Mexican state of Baja California are demanding an investigation into human rights violations following a violent police attack on Saturday, which came on the heels of other repressive measures. In Saturday's police repression, more than 60 agricultural workers were injured, five seriously. With national and international attention on the conflict, federal and state authorities have agreed to meet later this week with the San Quintin workers to seek a solution to the dispute before the upcoming harvest. The 30,000 agricultural day laborers, on strike since March, are demanding higher wages and an end to slavery-like working conditions. Clayton Conn reports from Mexico City. teleSUR
