A central Florida police officer died following a shooting in a wealthy residential suburb of Orlando early Saturday morning, according to a report by WESH Orlando.
Windermere officer Robert German, 31, was patrolling on foot when he noticed a suspicious couple walking in the suburb. The veteran officer immediately called for backup.
Four Orange County Sheriff's Office deputies, an Orlando and an Ocoee police officer arrived at the scene and found German lying wounded on the ground before hearing gunshots nearby.
They used patrol cars to shield the injured officer, placed him in a car and drove him out of the area. German was sent to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.
Police found the dead bodies of a man and a woman in a bush a few blocks away. The two appeared to have died from self-inflicted gunshot wounds.
Police later identified the couple as Davenport residents Brandon Goode, 18, and his British girlfriend, Alexandria Hollinghurst, 17.
Goode had been recently charged with marijuana possession, alcohol possession by a minor and for allegedly carrying drug paraphernalia. He was released when he was accepted into a pretrial diversion program last Thursday.
A background check on Hollinghurst, however, showed no criminal history and Hollinghurst's family reportedly believes that she may have also been a victim. Family members allege Goode likely murdered her before turning the gun on himself.
The Orange County Sheriff's Office is currently investigating German's lapel camera footage for more information regarding the case.
