A Syrian Air Force jet was shot down by Turkey on Sunday, March 23, in the latest skirmish between the two formerly allied neighbors.

Turkey says it has shot down a Turkish jet after it entered Turkish airspace. The Turkish military says two Syrian jets flew near its airspace border March 23.

One of the Syrian jets then reportedly flew more than a kilometer into Turkish air space.

Turkey says it issued four warnings before sending up two F-16s.

One of the Turkish warplanes then fired on the Syrian jet.

New video from the ground shows the plane's impact on a forest covered hillside in Syria, just over 1km from the border with Turkey.

A statement from Turkey said the Syrian plane was hit and destroyed. The Syrian Air Force said the pilot ejected.

A Syrian Air Force spokesperson said Turkish forces carried out a "downright aggressive action" and said the jet did not enter Turkish airspace.

Addressing supporters at a Sunday rally, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan confirmed that Turkish armed forces had downed the jet saying, "A Syrian plane violated our airspace. Our F-16s took off and hit this plane. Why? Because if you violate my airspace, our slap after this will be hard."

Prime Minister Erdogan also congratulated the Turkish Air Force for its successful interception and destruction of the Syrian jet.
