In a judgement sure to inspire plenty of parental fist-pumping, a New Jersey teenager who sued her parents for child support and tuition fees has lost her case.
Catholic high school senior Rachel Canning, 18, a cheerleader and honor student, says her parents are total downers and have all these way harsh rules and even kicked her out two days before her eighteenth birthday.
Rachel's father, a retired police chief with a thing for rules, says his daughter moved voluntarily out because she doesn't want to abide by his commands, which include being respectful, doing chores and breaking up with her boyfriend who they believe is a bad influence.
Rachel says she's staying with her friend's family. Her friend's lawyer father sided with the teen and has covered her legal costs.
Ms Canning tried to force her parents to immediately pay for her private school tuition as they've not signed any cheques since she began living elsewhere. They have also kept her car because, as they say, they paid for it.
The judge ordered the Cannings to maintain Rachel's college fund but rejected the teenager's request of $650 per month in child support.
Rachel's school appears to support her; on one occasion it even contacted New Jersey's Division of Child Protection about the family situation, Tuscon News reported.
