A California teen was struck and killed by a train Sunday afternoon while reportedly attempting to retrieve a dropped cell phone, according to a report by KTVU.

Eighth-grader Jenna Betti was sitting on train tracks with her boyfriend in Martinez, near San Francisco at around 5 p.m.

As a freight train approached them, the two reportedly got off the tracks, but Betti dropped her cellphone in the process and went back to get it when she was fatally struck by the train.

"She didn't judge the approach, and the train creates a vacuum, we were told, and it sucks you in," wrote her mother, Dena Betti, on Facebook. "We are beyond devastated."

Classmates at Martinez Junior High School wore pink, Betti's favorite color, in her memory on Monday, and flags were flown at half-staff.
